Soroti: Man strangles wife, commits suicide

Preliminary investigations conducted by the police suggest that Achipa, 35, was killed by her husband Akesa, who subsequently took his own life.

A 45-year-old man was discovered hanging from a mango tree some 150m from his residence in Ojama Village, Ocokican Sub-county in Soroti District on Sunday morning.

James Akesa had reportedly strangled his wife, Norah Achipa.

Preliminary investigations conducted by the police suggest that Achipa, 35, was killed by her husband Akesa, who subsequently took his own life.

According to Oscar Gregg Ageca, the East Kyoga Regional Police spokesperson, further inquiries indicate that Akesa engaged in a heated dispute with Achipo regarding domestic issues, alleging infidelity on her part.

Ageca said that following the altercation, the couple retired to their main residence for rest, while their six children sought refuge in their separate abode, situated approximately 15 meters away.

The following morning, on March 3, 2024, at 7am., the children departed for prayers only to return and discover the main house's door firmly shut.

Agayo Immaculate, one of the daughters, bravely ventured into her mother's bedroom upon finding the door closed, only to be confronted with the lifeless body of her mother.

Upon making the harrowing discovery, she raised an alarm, drawing the attention of villagers and authorities alike.

Subsequently, the police were summoned to the scene. The following day, a woman en route to her farm stumbled upon the body of Akesa James, suspended from a mango tree approximately 150m from his residence.

The community of Ojama village and the wider Soroti district are left reeling from this distressing incident, as investigations into the circumstances surrounding the tragic deaths of Akesa and Achipa continue.

Police also say they are actively present to prevent any potential retaliatory attack on the clan or relatives of the diseased
